Visit the stately Hill House Museum in Portsmouth, Virginia’s historic Olde Towne district. Docents provide tours of the four-story English basement home with details about the Hill family including new research showing connections between their ancestors, General Lafayette’s Portsmouth visit of 1824, and post commemorative events.The museum features beautiful period decorations created from historical descriptions of General Lafayette's Farewell Tour. Handmade transparencies will be on display. These painted paper or fabric panels were used to decorate public spaces and the windows of private homes. Once illuminated from behind, they create a vibrant image for onlookers. Elegant china sets owned by the Hill family with authenticated ties to General Lafayette’s Farewell Tour are displayed in the family dining room.
