The Museum of Chincoteague Island is proud to be the custodian of the 1st Order Fresnel Lens from the Assateague Lighthouse. There has been a lighthouse on Assateague since 1833, serving as a beacon to sailors traveling on sometimes treacherous seas.
The museum will also be highlighting the shipwrecks off the coast of Assateague Island that occurred during the 18th century including the LaGalga in 1750. This shipwreck not only had human survivors that came ashore but also the ancestors of the wild ponies that roam the island today.
During our 2025 season, we will be highlighting the connection between pirate and privateer. The war was won with the help of these “pirates” and we certainly had our fair share in the area.
Finally, we are going to be collaborating with the Captain Timothy Hill House in 2026 to host a ” Colonial Days” Festival. This event will feature crafts, homemaking, skills and talents of the residents of the 18th century
While there are currently no events listed specifically for Accomack County, search the VA250 Statewide Calendar of Events for a comprehensive listing of programs across the state.
