RICHMOND, VA – Step back in time and experience Virginia’s central role in the American Revolution when the VA250 Mobile Museum Experience, “Out of Many, One,” visits Kilmarnock. This innovative traveling exhibit will bring the story of the nation’s founding directly to the residents of Lancaster and Northumberland counties on May 28th at Kilmarnock Town Centre Park (150 N Main St, Kilmarnock, VA 22482). It will be open to the public from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.
The VA250 Mobile Museum Experience
More than just a static display, “Out of Many, One” is a cutting-edge, immersive, and hands-on exhibition housed within a custom-built 53-foot expandable tractor-trailer. Utilizing high-tech displays, interactive exhibits, and compelling artifacts, the museum offers visitors of all ages an engaging journey through the pivotal events, groundbreaking ideas, and diverse individuals who shaped America in its earliest days. It highlights Virginia’s essential contributions as the birthplace of the nation and its ongoing pursuit of a more perfect union.
Region’s little-known Revolutionary history
The visit is particularly relevant to the Kilmarnock area, a community with its own deep connections to the Revolutionary era. During the 18th century, what is now Kilmarnock (known then by names like “The Crossroads” and “Steptoe’s Ordinary”) was a vital rural and commercial hub in the Northern Neck. Residents of Lancaster and Northumberland counties, where the town is located, actively supported the Patriot cause by contributing men to the militia, providing essential supplies, and upholding the revolutionary spirit prevalent throughout Virginia’s Tidewater region.
The area was home to numerous patriots, including some of Virginia’s founders, who served in both local governance and the Continental Army. The region’s strategic location along the Chesapeake Bay and its navigable rivers made it crucial for transportation and communication during the conflict. Although Kilmarnock itself did not host major battles, its history is intrinsically linked to the broader struggles for independence. The experience of prominent residents, such as Thomas Gaskins V – a House of Burgesses delegate and militia recruiter – underscores the local impact; his estate was notably attacked by British privateers in 1781, illustrating the constant threat faced by Chesapeake communities and their contributions to resisting British efforts to disrupt the local economy.
The Mobile Museum’s visit offers a unique opportunity for Kilmarnock area residents and visitors to connect directly with these stories, understand the local context within the statewide narrative, and engage with the upcoming commemoration of America’s 250th anniversary in 2026.
