RICHMOND, VA (December 16, 2024) – Virginia American Revolution 250 Commission (VA250) has selected two-time Emmy Award-winning songwriter and creative director Bill Schermerhorn as its Event Designer, effective January 1.
Schermerhorn brings extensive experience in large-scale event production, most recently serving as Creative Director of Signature Events for The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. In this role, he combined storytelling, historical research, and large-scale event experience with 18th-century traditions to create grand and memorable live event productions throughout the year. His innovations include the expansion of Grand Illumination — the Foundation’s signature Christmas event — including a new Yule Log ceremony; an expanded “Lights of Freedom” Independence Day celebration; as well as expanded community events for Memorial Day, Veteran’s Day and other holiday commemorations.
“Bill’s extraordinary ability to blend storytelling with spectacular event design makes him the perfect fit for our team,” said VA250 Executive Director Cheryl Wilson. “His expertise will be instrumental in Virginia’s commemoration of America’s 250th birthday. We are fortunate to add his talents.”
Born on the Fourth of July, Schermerhorn’s patriotic spirit is evident in his work. He has directed iconic events such as the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular; and produced and staged “Broadway on Broadway” in Times Square, complete with an old-fashioned wedding, 50-piece orchestra, and a confetti-filled finale. He also orchestrated a fireworks display from Ellis Island to celebrate the Statue of Liberty’s 125th anniversary.
“I’m honored to contribute my creative vision to Virginia’s semiquincentennial planning efforts,” said Schermerhorn. “This opportunity to help design events that commemorate Virginia’s pivotal role in America’s 250-year history is, for me, a call to share the Commonwealth’s revolutionary and remarkable achievements.”
A William & Mary graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in History, Schermerhorn currently serves on the William & Mary Alumni Association Board of Directors.
